What We’re Reading, Eating, Playing, Obsesseing, Recommending, & Treating

Emily & Maria in Chapel Hill, NC

Welcome to the Monthly R.E.P.O.R.T. → April Edition!

Here’s what happened this month (so far):

Maria and Emily judged VCIC this past weekend at UNC Chapel Hill. Maria and Emily both competed as students in both Regional and Global VCIC events. If you know a university-affiliated venture group - tell them about VCIC!

Missouri Startup Weekend wrapped up on the first weekend of the month! SolvTax was the 1st place winner of $15k and 6 months of pre-launch support from Redbud VC. Check out the full press release here.

Emily was back in Lincoln, NE, judging the UNL New Venture Competition!

Maria attended Invest Midwest in Kansas City this week! Feeling = energized.

And there’s a lot more travel on the docket (MSP ✈️ CHI ✈️ DC and more!)

READING 📚

Emily’s Reading: A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

IYKYK 👀

No further questions at this time…

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Maria’s Reading:

I may be only 50 pages into the Young VC’s Handbook, but it is one of the best guides I’ve read! The sections in this book are essays written by some of the best-emerging VCs across the country. The lessons are applicable, actionable, and validating. Excited to keep reading.

No rating bc I’m not done yet, lol

EATING 🍴

Emily’s Eating: Poole’s Diner

Maria and I had a FEAST at Poole’s Diner in Raleigh, NC. Chef Ashley Christensen has won multiple James Beard awards and is a celebrity in her field, with multiple restaurants.

We ordered the Marinated Avocado Salad, Roast Half Chicken, Asparagus, and the iconic Macaroni Au Gratin. For dessert, we tried the Banoffee Cake with a cup of black coffee.

Forever reliving this meal 🤤

Maria’s Eating: MOD Pizza

Look, I know all of the pizza connoisseurs are going to hate me on this one, but you really can’t beat the value of MOD Pizza! I’ve been traveling a lot this month, and this $10.99 pizza is the only thing I can count on.

← Also second, all the takes on Poole’s (I dream of that mac and cheese)

PLAYING 🎲

Emily’s Playing: 13 Things I Wish I Knew in My 20s by The Mel Robbins Podcast

I’ve listened to this episode twice, and have sent it to all my friends. I think everyone in their 20s should give it a listen.

Everyone needs to be yelled at by Mel!

Shoutout Caroline W. for the podcast rec :)

Maria’s Playing: NYT Games

There is not a morning that goes by where I do not do the following NYT games:

  1. Connections

  2. The Mini

  3. Tiles

I am not a wordle person ☹️ . I got one of those Sudoku books as a kid, and I think that started my love for little puzzles!

OBSESSING 🤩

Emily’s Obsessing: Pickleball

This month, our junior VC group hit the pickleball courts for some bonding time. This was my first time playing, and I am OBSESSED.

Catch me “dinking” my sorrows away this summer 🎾

Lauryl and I in DC this month!

Maria’s Obsessing: Friends!

One of the best lessons I’ve learned being post-grad is that you have to make your friends a priority. You are the one who has to make intentional efforts to maintain those friendships!

As a bad texter - I make sure I text my long-distance friends at least 1x per month, and I make the trip to visit at least 1x per year! I visited one of my college besties in DC this month and had a blast. 🥳

RECOMMENDING 🏁

Emily’s Recommending: Abercrombie Sloane Tailored Pant

These pants have become such a staple in my life. They are so comfortable and high quality.

Highly recommend if you need a new work pant :p

Maria’s Recommending: A Diet Coke with the good ice

I don’t drink a lot of soda, but when I am down bad at work, I always recommend a crispy, icy, chilly Diet Coke. It doesn’t have to be a DC, any bev will get you out of that 3 pm slump.

TREATING 💫

Emily’s Treating: Patio Season

It’s finally Spring in Minnesota, and I’m sooooo excited to indulge in patio season.

Seasonal depression who???? Don’t know her.

I’ve also had some fun exploring non-alcoholic cocktails and brews. Share your recs if you have any!

Maria’s Treating: Bagel & Donut Wall

For Missouri Startup Weekend, the team put together a bagel & donut wall for the participants, and it was the TREAT of the century!

If you made it this far….
